The Orioles Have Come to Town

Spring has sprung and the birds are out in force.  We live in the city and see the usual city players; cardinals, sparrows, wrens, robins.  Occasionally a hummingbird will come by my butterfly bush but until a few weeks ago, we never saw an Oriole.  He seemed to really enjoy the bird bath, so much so that he brought back a friend.  I put out some oranges and grape jelly and they have been visiting a couple of times a day.

The robins are enjoying the bird bath too, but a baby robin evidently fell out of a nearby nest.  He had been hiding in my flowers, chirping for the mom to feed him.   And he flew the other day!

Yikes!  Bad Hair Day!

  1. It looks like you have a mister and misses oriole there. How lucky for you! Love the bad hair day shot. Is that one the baby robin? So cute!

    1. No, the bad hair day is the same robin as the first photo (before he/she got wet)! The baby is below - we never had orioles around before, how can you tell which is the is the female? I thought male/females had different color schemes like the cardinals.

    1. thanks! I was lucky they didn't get too skittish and fly off - we are in the city and the deck is pretty close to the bird bath!

    1. Thanks!! I like it too!! hard to get pics here, birds are very timid and fly off easily. I happened to be sitting on the deck and shot them with a point and shoot with a 30x zoom through the deck rails!

  4. Very cool post with nice insight into your backyard birds. We don't see Baltimore Orioles here but it's fun to watch our local players. They love the water especially since it has been so hot. I was out the other day and had a first time sighting - a Lazuli Bunting - it was a very pretty bird. Unfortunately no pics.

    1. Dan - never heard of a Lazuli Bunting! We really get just the basics here, even on the bike path. The bike path is about a 1/2 hour from my home and I do see a little more of a variety. I was so excited to see Orioles, especially in my yard!
